Groundcover Care
Choose the right plant for the light, then give it room to fill in.
Match the plant to the light.
Choose a groundcover suited to the amount of sun or shade in the planting area.
Water the root zone, not just the surface.
Keep newly planted groundcovers evenly moist while roots establish. Adjust frequency as the planting fills in.
Start with the right root environment.
Prepare in-ground soil so it drains well and supports the selected plant. For containers, use potting mix rather than garden soil.
In the ground or in a container?
In-ground
Space plants according to their mature spread and expected growth rate. Good initial spacing helps them fill in without becoming overcrowded too quickly.
Containers
Trailing and spreading groundcovers can work well in pots, window boxes, and hanging containers. Use good drainage and expect containers to dry faster.
Feed for the plant, not by habit.
Feed only as needed for the particular groundcover; many require little fertilizer once established.
Keep healthy growth in balance.
Trim edges and remove unwanted spreading growth to keep plants tidy and within bounds.
Read the symptoms as clues, not a diagnosis.
Bare patches
Check watering, spacing, and light.
Weak growth
The light conditions may not suit the plant.
Rot
Avoid constantly wet soil.
Overgrowth
Trim before plants become difficult to manage.
