Climbing Vine Care
Choose the right vine and give it enough support before the growth takes off.
Match the plant to the light.
Sun requirements vary by vine. Choose one that matches the exposure in your garden.
Water the root zone, not just the surface.
Water regularly while vines establish. Deep watering encourages stronger roots.
Start with the right root environment.
Use well-draining garden soil in-ground and quality potting mix in containers.
In the ground or in a container?
In-ground
Plant near a support appropriate for the mature vine and leave enough space between the root ball and walls/foundations.
Containers
Choose a large, stable container and a sturdy trellis or support. Vigorous vines may outgrow containers quickly, so select the variety carefully.
Feed for the plant, not by habit.
Feed according to the plant’s needs. Too much nitrogen can produce lots of leaves and fewer flowers.
Keep healthy growth in balance.
Train new growth early and prune to keep vines within their intended space.
Read the symptoms as clues, not a diagnosis.
Few flowers
Check sunlight and fertilizer.
Tangled growth
Train and prune regularly.
Wilting
Check root-zone moisture.
Weak support
Make sure structures can handle mature growth.
